John Carpenter Freeway, Irving, Texas 75063 Description: Installation of residential units that cool and dehumidify indoor air -- i.e., air-conditioning units, or AC -- is at an all time high in the United States today and continues to grow. Utilities have expressed concern that high penetrations of residential AC units pose new challenges for electric system reliability. The purpose of this one-day workshop is to bring the electric utility industry and AC manufacturing industry together to discuss the role that "stalling" by residential AC units following faults in the electric transmission and distribution system may be playing in increasing the risk of power system blackouts. This DOE-sponsored workshop represents an important public forum at which panelists will share information on what is known, the options available, and the considerations that must be made in assessing the best paths forward to address this problem. Panelists include experts from utilities, induction motor manufacturers, the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), EPRI, DOE, and others.
